Starflower Oil Capsules

Starflower oil, also known as borage oil, is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that is popularly believed to support hormonal balance for women, skin health, menopause symptoms, PMS symptoms, joint flexibility, and dry or irritated skin. Various NHS trusts recommend GLA oil in their online literature to help with breast pain: ‘it can be worth having a trial of either Starflower Oil or evening Primrose Oil. These are both rich in a substance called GLA (gamma linoleic acid), which has been found to sometimes help with breast pain. It is poorly understood why this may help with breast pain and some studies have cast doubt on whether it helps or not. However, some people do seem to get benefit from trying it, and it is a simple treatment with few side effects.

Both oils contain GLA, but starflower is often chosen for its higher potency and faster results. Starflower oil typically contains more GLA than evening primrose oil, around 20–24% compared to 8–10%. This makes it a more concentrated source, meaning you may be able to take a smaller serving for the equivalent benefits.

Starflower oil may help support hormone balance, as it seems to help reduce symptoms linked to fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone levels. GLA is thought to support the production of prostaglandins, which help regulate hormonal activity. It is commonly used to ease PMS, perimenopausal, and menopausal symptoms and many NHS trusts suggest its use for this purpose, even though it’s not proven how it actually works. Starflower oil supplements that have added Vitamin B6 are likely to be more effective than simple starflower oil, since this vitamin is proven to contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function; and to the regulation of hormonal activity. While starflower oil is not a treatment for anxiety, some women report improved mood and reduced tension when using it regularly. This may be due to its effect on hormone-related mood changes, particularly around menstruation or menopause. It should be used alongside other supportive approaches, as it is not likely to be sufficient as a standalone remedy.

You can take starflower oil at any time of day. Taking it with food may also aid absorption. The key is to be consistent with daily use.

It can take 4 to 6 weeks of regular use to notice the full benefits of starflower oil, especially for hormonal or skin-related concerns. Some people may notice improvements sooner, but long-term use is often needed to maintain results.
